How to Test a Workflow in Test Mode

Learn how to use Workflow Test Mode — a quick method to check and troubleshoot your workflow setup.

Select a Workflow to Test

Choose a workflow from the Configuration screen to trigger Test Mode.

  • Pick the workflow to test (e.g., Application for STR Workflow).

Tip: See Where to find a Workflow Configuration and How to add a Workflow.

  • Test Mode works for both active and inactive workflows.
  • In the top toolbar, click the Play icon to start Test Mode.
  • Select the Manual Trigger tab, then click Start.
  • A green dialog confirms the workflow test has started successfully.

Find the Workflow via My Tasks

Access the workflow execution easily from Workflow Operations → My Tasks.

  • Click the Workflow Operation tab.
  • Select My Tasks, then click the “Open in a new window” icon to view the workflow.

You’re now in the Workflow Execution view, where you can track progress through all workflow steps.

Follow Workflow Steps in Test Mode

You can use Override to simulate each step’s responses.

  • In Workflow Execution, click Override to complete responses directly.
  • Choose an employee, fill out fields, and confirm each step.
  • The workflow visualization updates automatically — completed steps turn green, the next active one turns blue.

Continue Through All Workflow Steps

Proceed step by step using Override to verify messages and logic.

  • Check message text and form questions.
  • Select example answers (e.g., CAT B, Gasoline).
  • Choose delivery dates and add comments.
  • Confirm after completing all responses.

Example of Email in Test Mode

See how emails are triggered by workflow steps.

  • Headlight sends the configured email to the Assignee.
  • The email text matches your setup.
  • The Go to form button opens a web form for responses.

After reviewing, return to Headlight and continue testing via Override.

Completing Next Steps

  • Use Override to simulate uploads and attachments.
  • Add sample files (e.g., driver’s license, ID card).
  • Check that attachments appear correctly in following steps and emails to suppliers.

Hover over attachments to preview them.

Testing Multiple Branches

Test all possible branches by choosing different answers.

  • Select No to follow the decline path.
  • Add comments and submit.
  • Confirm submission.
  • The workflow follows the NOK branch and notifies the Fleet Manager.

Tip: See the Workflow Branches video for detailed training.

Using Retry Step

Use Retry to re-execute a previous action and test alternative paths.

  • Scroll to the last completed action.
  • Select Retry (not from branch icons).
  • Add a retry message (optional) and click Retry.
  • Then use Override again to enter new responses (e.g., choose Yes).
  • Confirm to finish the alternate branch.

The workflow shows “Finished” in green when all steps complete successfully.

Return to Configuration Screen

When finished testing, return to the configuration.

  • Click the Settings icon → Go to Configuration.
  • You’re back on the Workflow Configuration screen, where you can edit, save, and relaunch Test Mode.

You’ve now learned how to test workflows effectively using Test Mode — an essential tool for verifying and troubleshooting workflows before activation.
